can be updated as much as possible!

Emergency Status:  No emergencies to report.......           no emergencies to report......

If the local phones get overloaded, we will call Pop Pop by cell to let

him know how we are doing. We should be able to call long distance.

So if you can't get ahold of us, don't panic!  We will call him!

July 29, 2008 (Tuesday)

11:42am - An earthquake shook southern California with the magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter.

The quake was centered 29 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles near the

San Bernardino County city of Chino Hills, and the U.S. Geological Survey

estimated the quake was about 8 miles below the earth's surface.

October 25, 2007 (Thursday)

"Repopulation Day" - Today marks 4 years since the Cedar Fires in 2003

5:23pm - 14 people are confirmed dead.  Damages due all the wild fires has reached over one billion dollars.

President Bush was here for 4 hours total.

G.Helen is waiting to be escorted by police back to her home.  Many Fallbrook residents can go

home, but need escorts to get there safely.  She has apparently been waiting since 10:00 this morning!

12:23pm - Governor Schwartzenegger and President Bush are in Escondido right now.

Schwartzenegger is thanking the firefighters for being so brave and now he is introducing

the President.  We have been declared a disaster area so there will be lots of federal funds

resources coming to our city to help out.  I think they are making sure that they don't drop

the ball like what happened with Hurricane Katrina.  There were hundreds of FEMA employees

here within a day of the fires starting!  1-800-621-fema is the number he gave for those who

might need federal assistance.  The President has just said, "We're with you San Diego.  We're not

going to forget about you back in Washington!"  Now they are off to have lunch with the firefighters.

Fallbrook is still a very dangerous area.  I haven't heard anything from G.Helen but I'm sure she

can't get home.  And she shouldn't!  Her house is still about 2 miles from the fire!

11:13am - We are home.  Terry and Sue are back home.  Bree and Paul were evacuated last night.

Bree still has to work since she has medical training, so she's staying with a friend.

Eric and Yolanda are back home now.  G.Helen is attempting to go home, however, she

will probably get turned away.  Her area is still very dangerous.  I haven't heard the latest on Mike.

Linda is still working in Chatsworth.  Steven and Steve are still not in a fire affected area

at all, which is great!  Statistics:  over 200,000 acres have burned, 3 people are dead.

Two of those were folks who refused to evacuate when they were told to.

Their remains were found in their home just after midnight last night in the Highland Ranch

area (northeast of Poway).

President Bush is in town.  I guess he landed at Miramar earlier this morning.

Right now he's taking photos with firefighters at Kit Carson Park on TV.

Governor Schwartzenegger is still in town also.  They are both assessing the fires and

damage to San Diego County.  The Reverse 911 calls were real lifesavers this time.

Many people perished in the 2003 fires because of confusion, panic and people not

getting notices to evacuate in time.

October 24, 2007 (Wednesday)

11:13pm - We are all home now.  The kids and I came home about 6:15pm tonight.

The air quality is better and our neighborhood seems to be out of harm's way.

I can't say that about many of my family and friends though.  Please keep praying

for these fires to be contained.  The kids are off school all week and so am I.

I went to work today, as did many in our office.  G.Helen left Lester's place and

came over to my mom's.  She'll stay there until she is allowed back into Fallbrook.

Everyone's nerves are frazzled, as expected, but the humidity levels are up and winds

are dying down, so hopefully the fires will be subdued and the fire fighters can knock

them out once and for all!

October 22, 2007 (Monday)

3:13pm – G.Helen is now at Terry & Sue’s.  San Ysidro and Chula Vista have fires.

San Marcos has been 100% contained.  They have evacuated south of Scripps Poway Parkway

and north of MCAS Miramar.  Fallbrook is evacuating, as well as, Valley Center.

I don’t think we can get home tonight.  San Diego schools are closed until Wednesday.

Palomar College is closed today and Tuesday.

11:10am - Mike is still at home in Escondido.  Don't know if he is going to evacuate.

G.Helen is still at home in Fallbrook.  She won't evacuate unless absolutely necessary.

Steven called - he's not in any danger.  Sue & Terry are not in danger.  Bree and Paul

are still in Campo (Harris fire area) - Sue told us they are not leaving unless necessary.

Bree has medical training so she will probably be needed to help out in her area.

I-15 is still completely closed.

100,000+ acres have burned.

250,000+ people have been evacuated.

120,000+ reverse 911 calls made.

Words the news reporters are using:  wasteland, apocalyptic, overwhelmed…

9:26am - We are at my mom's now.  We came out here before 7:00am.

We were not formally evacuated but they were shutting down the freeway by our place

plus I was getting sick because of the thick smoke in the air.  So we packed up the kids and cats and left.

But, we are fine though.

5:51am - We have not been evacuated yet, but may.  According to the news and other sources,

I am hearing that many in Poway are getting reverse 911 calls telling them to evacuate.  I will start

gathering things just in case.  I'm not going to work today, obviously.  John is on his way home and

should be here soon.  I heard there's a new fire by Pauma Valley or San Marcos area.  I tried

calling Mike but he didn't answer.  Fires are in Rancho Bernardo and heading toward Wild Animal

Park.  Air quality here is awful, of course.  I got some sleep but went to bed with a headache

and am waking up with one, too.  If that's all that happens, I'll consider myself lucky!

October 21, 2007 (Sunday)

11:13pm - City officials just had a press conference...Mayor Jerry Sanders announced that he

expects the fire to enter city limits by 1:00 or 2:00am.  Chief Tracy Jarman said

they are having trouble getting air tankers up because of the strong winds.

As a personal note, there is no need for our family to evacuate, as of now and probably

at all.  But keep praying!  One person and two horses have died, plus many (14?)

have been seriously injured so far.

10:48pm - Poway High School was an evacuation site for Ramona.

As of right now, they are moving it to Mira Mesa High School.

All of North East Poway is being evacuated.  The news just said

the Harris fire has burned over 20,000 acres so far.

Witch Creek has burned over 10,000 so far.  DeJa Vu from 2003.

10:20pm - North East Poway residents are being told to evacuate now.

We are still safe, but air conditions are horrible.  Ash is flying like snow.

Dianne Jacob is now on the news stating that these fires have the

definite possibility to be worse than the Cedar fires 4 years ago.

Don't know if I'm going to work tomorrow...

John is at work monitoring the news.

Governor Schwartzenegger will be in town tomorrow.

San Diego is in an official state of emergency.

I'm worried about my co-workers that work in the Julian,

Potrero, Campo and other east county libraries.

Winds are blowing strong in a south-west direction, toward us.

Pray!

9:30pm - All PUSD and Ramona schools will be closed tomorrow.

All residents of Ramona are under a mandatory evacuation.

Winds still blowing strong making it impossible to control the fire.

When they were dropping water earlier in the day,

it was just turning to mist and becoming ineffective.

8:21pm - Two wild fires are burning in East County.  They are calling them the Harris

fire (by Potrero) and the Witch Creek fire (by Santa Ysabel and Ramona).

Dry winds are fueling the fires right now...they are currently not under control.

As for us, it's hard to breathe the thick, smoky air and ash is

flying freely so our eyes are itching...but, other than that, we

are not in any immediate danger!  We're very thankful for that!

Bree says the fire in her area is about 8 miles away but the winds

are blowing the opposite direction, so she's not worried for now.

6-12-05  at 8:41am

An earthquake centered in a highly active and potentially dangerous

fault zone rattled Southern California yesterday, putting cracks into

the wall and foundation of a North County fire station.

The magnitude 5.6 tremor, at 8:41 a.m., was strongest around its

southern Riverside County origin, but was felt throughout

San Diego County and as far away as Arizona and Nevada...

Emerging from the San Jacinto fault zone, the earthquake was

followed by more than 180 virtually imperceptible aftershocks

in the next six hours, ranging from magnitude 1.0 to 3.1.

4-12-05  at 4:06am

4.0 earthquake with the epicenter 3 miles east of Jamul, CA.  This is pretty close to us!  The first "bang" happened and woke me.  Sounded like someone hit my bedroom door with a bowling ball!  Immediately after came the loud, jolting bang.

This was the same as last June!  Not a rolling temblar, but it feels like a jolt and sounds like an explosion.  What a rude way to wake up!  But, again, no one was hurt.  Didn't even wake up the kids!

6-15-04 at 4:30pm:

At 3:29pm, an earthquake jolted San Diego, CA.  The latest report is that it was 5.2 magnitude on the Richter scale, centered 52 miles West Southwest of Rosarito, out in the ocean, 9 miles down.   It was felt in South Los Angeles, Tijuana, Palm Desert and San Diego.

It was not the typical rolling temblar we're used to feeling when an earthquake happens.  This was a quick, strong jolt.  Everyone is fine, no harm or injuries to report.  I'll keep posting info as I get it should anything change.

Hot in Prison?

How to call the police

George Phillips of Meridian, Mississippi was going up to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.  He phoned the police, who asked "Are any of those people in your house?" and he said no. Then they said that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply stay in his house, lock his doors and an officer would be along when available. George said, "Okay!" hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again. "Hello I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now cause I've just shot them all".  Then he hung up.  Within three minutes three police cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up at the Phillips residence. Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed.  One of the Policemen said to George:  "I thought you said ... That you'd shot them!"   George said, "I thought you said ...there was nobody available!" (true story)

Way to go George!
